First Haircut

Ben got his very first haircut this weekend. He was growing quite a mullet, and while that might be a style choice for some people, it isn't the look we are going for!
I thought and thought about where I would take him to have it done. At the barber? At Supercuts? At one of those Kid's cuts places? And in the end I just could not bring myself to take him anywhere.

I was afraid he would scream, thrash around and make a big scene in the shop, and I didn't want to deal with that. I was afraid he would be scared, and what mom wants to scare their kid? And I was a little afraid myself, that taking him to get a "big boy" haircut, means that he was now a big boy, and I am just NOT ready for that!

So in the end, I cut it myself. I have never cut any one's hair before, unless you want to count trimming Todd's hairline, or the unfortunate bang cutting of my pre-teen years. SO it was pretty well certain that it was going to turn out badly.

After all was said and done, it actually doesn't look too bad. The front looks a bit choppy, and I can't say it is all even, but it looks better than the mullet.

And if you think it doesn't....don't tell me!

Cousins, Identical Cousins....Ok not even close to identical...but they are cousins

We had the wonderful fortune of babysitting our nephew Dean on Saturday night while his parents celebrated their wedding anniversary with dinner and a play.

Dean was such a wonderful baby! He never cried, he ate his dinner, he took his medicine, he went to bed without a peep. I think he was priming his aunt and uncle to have another baby someday. "See guys babies are EASY!"

The boys had fun playing together. Dean sitting and watching his tornado of a cousin, and Ben running in circles and bringing Dean every toy in his toy box. At least he was sharing!

Bite me once....

Well Ben has a bit of a problem with a certain young lady in his room at daycare. I am sure she is normally a lovely little child, however something about my son brings out the fangs.

He was bitten for the 4th time yesterday. This time she drew blood.

When I picked him up yesterday he looked like he needed to go home and have a stiff drink (and no I didn't give him one, mommy had one instead, you know, for his sake). You could tell he was just .... DONE... with the day.

I asked the daycare director if there was anything that Ben was doing to provoke the little girl. Apparently he is a perfect gentleman (as 18 month olds go) and she just has a not so good way of dealing with her feelings. On one hand I was glad to hear that my son wasn't causing trouble, but on the other I wanted there to be some good reason why Ben is being picked on!

I feel very sorry for the parents of the little girl, I know they are doing everything they can to try and rid her of this habit. I do understand their frustration. But I hope that they saw my little boy yesterday, looking so sad and withdrawn, and can understand a little bit of mine.

New Words

Ben's new words in the last few weeks are just simply adorable.

He now can say "banana" except (like most kids) it comes out "nana". I can not tell you how cute it is to hear him say it.

Also, he now says "baby". When he says it he changes his voice to a very soft sweet sound and says each syllable as if it was its own word.

Oh goodness, my kid is too freakin' cute.

How to make banana bread

First gather your ingredients and dump them on the counter. If some of them get in the bowl. BONUS!

Next Stir the ingredients well. Pose for the camera.

Next, ask the sous chef to help dust off of of this extra flour. That is what they are for right?

Give it a good taste. DELICIOUS!

Lick the bowl.

And there you have it. Banana bread. Easy, right?

Labor Day

We visited Grandma and Grandpa Whitehead at their vacation Condo in Lake Geneva this weekend.

Here is a video of Ben in the swimming pool. HE LOVED IT!

Please let this week be calm

We had a bit of a stressful week last week.

Ben came down with a fever on Monday morning (=mommy stays home from work) which escalated into a REALLY high fever on Tuesday (=mommy stays home from work AND gets to take baby to the doctor). Come to find out that he has another ear infection, this makes #4.

My grandmother passed away on Tuesday morning. She had been battling breast cancer and the resulting health problems for a very long time. She gave a good fight, but she knew that it was her time to go and everyone was able to say their goodbyes to her before she went to sleep for the last time.

So, Grandma Charlene made the trek into the city for babysitting duty on Wednesday. I bought plane tickets to Seattle for Thursday night.

We felt Ben was doing better on Thursday morning, the fever was gone and he was acting normally. So off to daycare he went.

I left for the airport in the afternoon from work and Todd was picking him up that evening to begin his daddy & Ben time while mommy was away. When Todd picked him up he noticed pretty serious looking rash covering his torso. As you can see, Ben wasn't really phased by it, but it looked bad.

When I called from the airport we decided a call to the doc was in order. While Todd was waiting for the doc to call back Ben slipped off the couch and split his lip, not badly but enough for there to be blood. Poor Todd. I'm so sorry I wasn't there to help out. OK maybe I am glad I wasn't there. I'm not sure.

The doctor calls back and says that the rash is a common side effect of the antibiotic that he is on and that it will go away on its own. However, because we can't send him to daycare with a rash....Grandma Charlene to the rescue! She kindly came out and watched the little "blond tornado" on Friday.

Dad and Ben made it through the weekend until I came home on Sunday (with some help from some friends dropping by with dinner and some extra distractions for Ben)
So we made it through it all, with only a few bumps and bruises. Ben's were more physical than my own emotional ones. And Todd, he got hit with both.
Help us hope that this week will be less eventful!

Let's give this a shot

I am taking a clue from some other friends who have recently had kids and have far away family. I think maybe a family blog might be in order for us too.

Nothing too special, but an easy way for me to communicate with all of our 'peeps and share some pictures.

I always feel guilty forcing myself and our family on people who really don't care to see endless pictures, hear about Ben's recent cold, or how darn cute he is in his new Keen sandals.

However there are several people who tell me that they DO want to hear about this stuff. This will give everyone the opportunity to tune in when they want, and tune out when they don't!

So here we go....the Whitehead Family Blog. Let's see how this works!
